I attended with a major enthusiast who like myself has seen Dylan many
many times since 1978 in the UK and two people seeing him for the first
time. Dylan gave a great performance being on song from the opening number
to the last, hardly taking a breath between songs despite the changes of
mood and tempo. His voice was very strong. The band were on top form. The
sound quality was pretty good. So why were the audience so shamefully
disrespectful? As the house lights went down and the opening chords of '
the foggy dew ' rung out, this should have been the signal to give the man
( the Nobel prize winner, no less ) a great warm welcome, sadly this was
not the case and instead there was a shameful indifference. This continued
throughout the evening with most of the sell out audience not bothering to
clap let alone cheer or request songs. I felt really embarrassed for
Dylan...the tickets certainly said " Bob Dylan and his Band" so it should
not have been any surprise that he had an electric band and his last three
albums have been covers so he played a selection of them, again this
should not have been a shock to anyone with any sense. The most
pathetically shocking insult was the unbelievable indifference when he
finished the set with a beautiful ' Autumn Leaves '...I have never
experienced anything like it. Everyone just sat motionless in their seats
waiting for their encores...they could not be arsed to even clap. Strange
but true. DYLAN SHOULD NOT HAVE PERFORMED AN ENCORE ! Why should he
bother? These so called Dylan fans should be ashamed of themselves, I know
in this digital age everything is a click away ( full gigs!?, set
Iist, band, reviews, etc ) but this was an audience despite its mixed age
range showing total disrespect from the moment the house lights went down.
I truly hope that he never performs in the city of Nottingham again and
visits Birmingham instead. Nauseatingly shocking.
