Review by Nick Miller
The trip from Raleigh to Virginia Beach is eventful - the bus breaks down
then having just made the train connection in Persburg the train is slowed
down by the heat. I have a night to relax and on the Tuesday enjoy
wandering around Virginia Beach and hear chatter of going to see Bob.
The Virginia Beach amphitheatre is a way out of town and my lift gets
lost in the hospital nearby but we make it. The venue is much like Raleigh
and again I'm at the front of the lawn area with very pleasant neighbours.
The sound is amazing. The temperature is hot.
Bob starts at 7.58 pm. The set list is the same as Raleigh except for
songs 15 and 16 replaced by Highway 61 Revisited and a cover of Jim
Anglin's Searching for a soldier's grave.
To Ramona is a highlight and Early Roman Kings sees the band in full
flight. I'll make it up to you has a country feel fitting for the Outlaw
Music Festival.
During an exquisite Desolation Row which lilts along beautifully one of
the many fighter planes heard over Virginia Beach zooms by. It's dark now
with a small moon shining, there's the slight hint of a cooling breeze
too.
Next song which stands out is a spooky feeling Blind Willie McTell. This
is followed by the two new songs tonight - a rollicking Highway 61 with
Bob in fine voice and the cover Searching for a soldier's grave where I
can make out the lyrics but not the song at the time. As seen on the big
screen! Tony is clearly directing the band during these songs.
A solid Don't think twice and Bob is on his way. No band intros and some
nice harmonica solos scattered throughout the night.
The concert concludes at 9.16 pm. It's been great seeing Bob twice in the
last few days - I'm now heading to Tulsa to visit the Bob Dylan and Woody
Guthrie centres. Roll on Bob.
